Presidents Welcome Message

Players, Families, Friends and Colleagues of South Shore Minor Hockey,

I want to Welcome You all back for the official opening of the 2023/2024 Hockey Season! I am very excited for what this coming season has in store for us in the South Shore. Hockey is a wonderful sport – it is a corner stone of the Canadian identity, it is a resilient strength in our communities, and it has the power to teach everyone (players, coaches, officials & parents) key life skills to help build as stronger members of society.

Going into this year, we are looking to start building a stronger association – organizationally, developmentally focused and financially. As has been previously announced; we are looking for more volunteers for specific roles and will be looking for many more to join sub-committees to help progress our Association. We are looking for new ways to develop our players, coaches and officials – we need to have a mindset that if we are not growing (learning) we are dying. As an example, we are reviewing our tryout policy and procedure for this coming season. Finally, we need to be able to support these initiatives by ensuring we have the correct levels of income to balance the needs of the association – this comes through making a correction in our registration costs and looking for new and innovative ways to bring in funds through sponsorships, government grants, etc. In the spirit of organizational transparency, we will be hosting an online information session to explain the cost challenges the association faces and where the money from registration goes. As this year we’ve needed to make a correction in our registration costs, I am happy to announce we are deploying a pilot for this year to help families offset the cost of registration. As with any pilot we will evaluate the success and benefits of it and will communicate the results at the 2024 Annual General Meeting.

For players and families joining Hockey for the first time, Welcome to the Hockey Family! Enjoy the journey you are on, both players and parents. The skills and relationships you are about to build have the power to shape who you will become. Have fun with your journey!

For the players and families returning for another great year, Welcome Back! Continue to challenge yourselves to be better and improve everyday. Always be a student of the game –have fun with what you do, look for something new, try something harder, and continue to get back up; “Failure is just speed bump to success”

For the players and families entering their last year, Thank You! You all have made an impact on this association – take time to remember that very first step you had on the ice and the feeling you had. Reach out to the younger players in our association and inspire them – you may not know it, but they look up to you. Families – sincerely Thank You! Thank You for the commitment and passion you have brought to the rink for your player but also their teams and our Association.

For the first time and returning Coaches, challenge yourself to continue to be a student of the game – you have a pivotal impact on our players and families. Inspire every player to fall deeper in love with the game and inspire them to also develop the mindset to want to improve every day!

For our Officials, Thank You for your passion for the game. What you do is a wonderful contribution to the game of Hockey. Everyone one in this association appreciates what you do every game day! Inspire our older players to want to become officials, officiating as an important part of our game.

For the numerous volunteers that make it all possible behind the scenes – Your efforts and dedication are the fuel to the engine that makes the Hockey season possible. Continue to get involved and for those unsure about getting involved I challenge you to get involved, even something small makes a big difference.

In closing I am excited to officially open the 2023/2024 Hockey Season for South Shore Minor Hockey. I look forward to what this season brings and seeing you all at the rinks across the South Shore and Nova Scotia.

Justin Mullaney, President South Shore Minor Hockey Association
